A Conversation That Sparked Reflection

Yesterday, I had a heartfelt conversation with a close friend about something truly beautiful: God’s love. We were in awe of how God, in His mercy and grace, chooses to work through us—even though we often feel unworthy and unqualified. And yet, He still calls us to participate in His divine mission.

“But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.”
—1 Corinthians 1:27

When God calls us, He qualifies us. Not by our merit, but by His love and purpose. But in that conversation, we touched on something deeper—something that made me pause and reflect.

Our Role: Plant the Seed, Trust the Spirit

As followers of Christ, we often feel responsible for guiding new believers. But the truth is, our primary role is to plant the seed of faith. After that, it’s not our job to micromanage their journey. It's the Holy Spirit who nurtures, convicts, and grows their relationship with Jesus.

“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.”
—1 Corinthians 3:6

Too often, we remain in the picture long after we’ve made the introduction to Christ. We try to dictate how new believers should talk, behave, dress, or worship. In doing so, we risk obstructing the most important relationship of all—their personal, intimate walk with Jesus.

The Analogy: A Friend in Love

Imagine introducing two friends who begin to fall in love. Would you attend every date? Correct their conversations? Choose their outfits? That would be absurd. Yet, spiritually, we sometimes do this when someone begins their relationship with Christ.

We must resist the urge to overstep. Instead of teaching them how to behave for Jesus, let Jesus teach them Himself. He sees the heart. He knows the journey. And He never judges the way humans do.

“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
—1 Samuel 16:7

Let the Holy Spirit Lead

When we step out of the way and let the Holy Spirit do what only He can do, something powerful happens. That new believer begins to fall in love with Jesus, not with a church system or a spiritual mentor. Their faith becomes rooted in the Savior—not in us.

“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”
—John 16:13

Yes, knowledge, doctrine, and prophecy have value. But the foundation of faith is love—God’s love for us, and our love for Him.

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.”
—Matthew 22:37-38

Trust God’s Process

Let’s be faithful in planting the seed. Let’s be patient in stepping back. And let’s be confident in this: God knows how to grow His children. His Spirit will lead, teach, convict, and transform—just like He’s done with us.

So to every believer sharing their faith: do so in love, and then trust in the One who brings the growth.

Let the love grow. 🌱

This Is Not a Place for Perfect People

Have you ever asked yourself, “Am I good enough for God to use me?” If your answer leans toward “no”, then you're actually in a place where God can do His greatest work.

Growing up in a Christian home, I’ve seen firsthand how God moves—and one thing has always stood out: God consistently works through imperfect, impatient, and even stubborn people. Just look at the story of Jonah.

God Uses the Unlikely

Jonah was a prophet, chosen by God, but he ran from his calling (Jonah 1:1–3). He didn’t run because he was confused—he ran because he didn’t want to obey. Yet God pursued him, redirected him, and still used him to carry out a mission of mercy. That tells us something powerful: our imperfections don’t disqualify us from God’s plan—sometimes, they’re what make the story worth telling.

We sometimes get caught up in high standards—and rightly so. As followers of Christ, we uphold high standards in our thinking, our health, our discipline, and our knowledge of God. But here's the danger: when we confuse high standards with spiritual perfection, we lose sight of grace.

No One Measures Up

Paul writes in Romans 3:23,

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

That means everyone. Even those who seem to have it all together. So if you ever find yourself comparing your “standard” with others and feeling superior, it’s time to step back and remember—spiritual pride is just another sign of imperfection.

Yet, even then, God still chooses to work with you.

From the Bold to the Broken

Consider Elijah. He was bold. He called fire down from heaven, challenged kings, and stood up for truth. But in a moment of fear and discouragement, he ran and hid, crying out, “It is enough; now, Lord, take my life!” (1 Kings 19:4). Even the most faithful can feel unworthy. Still, God didn’t abandon Elijah—He met him gently, encouraged him, and sent him back into service.

God’s Grace Covers Every Condition

Some people come to God feeling unworthy—burdened by guilt, sin, or shame. Others come feeling they’ve earned their place—convinced they’ve “done enough.” But the truth is, whether you feel broken or bold, God’s grace is the only reason any of us stand.

Paul reminds us:

“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

Conclusion: A Place for Real People

This is not a place for perfect people—it’s a place for real people.

People like Jonah, who run.
People like Elijah, who fear.
People like you and me, who fail—and still choose faith.

Let this truth bring peace to your heart:
You don’t have to be perfect to be used by God. You just have to be willing.

When Amusement Becomes a Trap: A Biblical Look at Pleasure, Purpose, and the Christian Mind

There’s a passage tucked inside Testimonies for the Church, Volume 1, page 497, that hits surprisingly hard in today’s world. Ellen G. White writes to young people with a kind of prophetic urgency:

“They have a keen ear for music, and Satan knows what organs to excite to animate, engross, and charm the mind so that Christ is not desired. The Word of God is unheeded.”
(1T 497)

It’s wild how something written in the 1800s feels like it was drafted for a generation raised on TikTok, endless notifications, and streaming platforms. She wasn’t attacking joy or passion — she was warning about amusements that numb the soul and lead the heart away from Jesus without you even noticing.

Today, entertainment is more accessible, more addictive, and more engineered for distraction than at any other point in history. What she described — the mind being “charmed” away from Christ — is happening every single day on a scale she couldn’t have imagined.

But this raises a real question:

What Does the Bible Actually Say About Amusement and Excitement?

Here’s the surprising truth:
Scripture doesn’t condemn fun, joy, or excitement. God isn’t anti-celebration. He’s not sitting on the throne grumpy because someone somewhere is laughing or enjoying life.

Jesus literally attended weddings.
David danced.
The Psalms overflow with joy, singing, and celebration.
Solomon says there’s “a time to laugh.”

So the issue isn’t excitement — it’s distraction.

1. “Guard your mind.” — 1 Peter 5:8

This command isn’t outdated. It’s the whole foundation.

The Bible keeps coming back to the mind:

“Be sober-minded.”
“Set your mind on things above.”
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Why?
Because your mind is the battlefield.
Your attention is your spiritual life.

Whatever captures your attention shapes your character.

2. “Not all things are helpful.” — 1 Corinthians 10:23

There are things that aren’t sinful in themselves — but they’re also not building you spiritually. Paul makes this incredibly mature point:

Just because something is allowed doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

You can watch it…
You can listen to it…
You can participate in it…
But is it helping you become who God is calling you to be?

That’s the real question.

3. God Created Joy

Sometimes Christians forget that joy was God’s idea.

He created laughter.
He created celebration.
He created community.
He created music.
He created excitement.

Fun is not the enemy.
Losing your focus is.

So Where’s the Line?

Here’s where Scripture and common sense intersect:

Acceptable amusement:

Refreshes your spirit
Bond your family
Builds relationships
Brings you joy that doesn’t stain the conscience
Leaves you feeling more alive, not spiritually empty
Points your mind toward God, not away from Him

Dangerous amusement:

Numbs your spiritual senses
Replaces time with God
Fills your mind with impurity, violence, or pride
Creates addiction
Pulls your emotions away from Christ
Makes eternal things feel “boring” by comparison
Leaves you spiritually tired and mentally foggy

Ellen White wasn’t condemning “fun.”
She was sounding the alarm about fun that drains the soul.

And honestly — if something steals your hunger for God, it’s not entertainment… it’s enslavement.

The Real Question: Who Am I Becoming?

At the end of the day, this isn’t about rules, restrictions, or legalism. God isn’t monitoring your Netflix or your Spotify like an angry hall monitor.

He’s after something deeper:

Your direction.
Your focus.
Your spiritual sensitivity.
Your purpose.
Your freedom.

Ask yourself:

After this activity, do I feel closer to God?
Do I feel clearer, calmer, and spiritually awake?
Or do I feel numb, distracted, and disconnected?

Your answer tells you everything.

God Wants Your Joy — Not Your Numbness

This is the heart of it right here:

God delights in your joy.
He created excitement.
He created pleasure.
He created color, sound, movement, celebration.

But He never intended for you to trade your purpose for your entertainment…
or your calling for your distractions…
or your spiritual fire for digital noise.

He wants you alive — truly alive.
And true life starts when your joy fuels your purpose, not replaces it.

When Life Gets Messy: A Lesson From the Road

There's a moment on the road when things go sideways — and you just have to hold on.

Last night, we rolled into Indianapolis as part of our week-long journey from Phoenix, Arizona, to Andrews University in Michigan. After seven days on the road, our tour bus — we call her Faith — needed to be relieved of her gray water and black water tanks. It was nearly 10 PM when we finally found a dump station at a gas station on the edge of the city. One station. That was it.

We pulled in, tired but grateful, ready for what should have been a routine fifteen-minute stop.

It was anything but.

When Routine Becomes a Nightmare

The moment we finished connecting the hoses and opened the valves, everything went wrong. The dump station was clogged — something we had no way of knowing in the dark — and black water began spraying in every direction. Fast. Everywhere.

Within seconds, the smell hit the entire lot. People nearby stopped and stared. We scrambled to disconnect, tried desperately to wash down the area with the tap water available, but there was no drainage system. There was nothing we could do.

The shame was immediate. Even though the problem wasn't our fault — even though we couldn't have known the station was clogged — we felt the blame. We felt every eye. We felt the weight of a mess we didn't intend to make.

We disconnected as quickly as we could, climbed back into Faith, and disappeared into the night. I couldn't pull out of that parking lot fast enough.

The Mess We Didn't See Coming

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." — Romans 3:23

Sometimes in life, we make a mess — not always from carelessness, but because something broken was already in the system long before we arrived. A decision that seemed right. A path that looked clear. And then without warning, what should have been simple turns into something we never intended.

Our instinct? Run. Disappear. Do exactly what we did that night — detach, drive away, and hope no one saw.

And that's exactly what we tend to do with God.

God Sees What Others Can't

At that gas station, people in the parking lot saw the mess. They couldn't see the clogged station. They couldn't see the broken infrastructure in the dark. They assumed. They judged by what was visible on the surface.

But God doesn't work that way.

"The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." — 1 Samuel 16:7

When we run from our messes — from our failures, our embarrassments, our unintended disasters — we run as if God sees us the way that parking lot did. Shocked. Disgusted. Ready to write us off.

But He doesn't.

He sees up close. He sees what we can't even see in ourselves — the clog in the system, the broken things we didn't know were there, the conditions we were working under. He sees the heart behind the decision, the exhaustion behind the choice, the intention underneath the outcome.

He Knows What You Can Become

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." — Jeremiah 29:11

God doesn't just see your mess. He sees your potential. He sees the journey you're on — from where you started to where He's taking you. He knows Faith needs to make it to Michigan. He knows the road still ahead.

All He asks is that you don't run from Him the way we fled that parking lot.

Stay. Let Him see you up close. Trust that His view of you is bigger, cleaner, and more complete than any midnight parking lot moment could ever define.

Keep Rolling

We were back on the highway within minutes. Faith kept moving. The mission continued. And this morning, we woke up closer to where we're going — a little humbled, a little wiser, and grateful that the God we serve doesn't judge the way a parking lot does.

Whatever mess you're carrying today — intended or not — don't run.

God already sees it. And He sees you — all the way through.

Why Doesn’t the Church Teach Math and Physics?

The universe is God’s first language. Mathematics and physics are its grammar.

A CONFESSION ABOUT MATH CLASS

I grew up learning math in school. Then physics. And I’ll be honest with you — those were two of the hardest subjects I ever faced. But looking back now, I think I understand why. The teachers who stood at the front of those classrooms were themselves struggling. They hadn’t truly learned the material deeply, so they couldn’t teach it deeply. The chain of understanding was broken before it ever reached me.

But here’s what I’ve since come to understand: math and physics are not just difficult academic subjects. They are profound. They are — and I say this with full theological weight — the language in which God wrote the universe.

IN THE BEGINNING, GOD CREATED

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."

— Genesis 1:1

This is the opening declaration of all Scripture — and it is not merely a religious statement. It is a cosmological one. The Hebrew word bara (בָּרָא), used here for “created,” describes creation from nothing — ex nihilo — an act exclusive to God. The universe did not self-organize. It was spoken into being by a Mind of infinite intelligence, and that intelligence is woven into every atom, every orbit, every gravitational wave.

The same God who said “Let there be light” also encoded the speed of that light — 299,792,458 meters per second — as a fixed constant of reality. That is not coincidence. That is authorship.

THE HEAVENS DECLARE — BUT WHO IS LISTENING?

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them."

— Psalm 19:1–3

The Psalmist David, a shepherd who spent his nights under open sky, understood something that many modern churches have forgotten: creation is itself a form of divine communication. It is what theologians call General Revelation — God making Himself known through the created order, rightly understood only through the lens of Scripture. "Since the book of nature and the book of revelation bear the impress of the same master mind, they cannot but speak in harmony... Rightly understood, both science and the written word make us acquainted with God by declaring the laws through which He works." — Ellen G. White, Education, p. 128 (1903)

Notice the language in Psalms 19: they pour forth speech... they reveal knowledge. The cosmos is not silent. It is speaking, constantly, in the language of physics and mathematics. When we learn to hear it — when we understand orbital mechanics, electromagnetic fields, quantum superposition — we are, in a very real sense, listening to God’s first sermon.

Yet the Psalmist adds a haunting detail: “no sound is heard from them.” The message requires ears trained to receive it. Math and physics are those ears.

THE BLUEPRINT HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT

"It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings."

— Proverbs 25:2

Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, understood that God intentionally hides things — not to keep us away, but to invite us deeper. The concealment is not deception; it is an invitation to pursue. And the pursuit of the concealed things of creation — through science, mathematics, and physics — is described here as something glorious.

Consider what we have uncovered through that pursuit: we now understand why planes defy gravity — not because gravity is overcome, but because we learned its rules well enough to work within them. Rockets that escape Earth’s atmosphere do so because someone sat down and solved differential equations rooted in the same physical laws God established at creation. Spacecraft that have traveled beyond our solar system do so because a handful of humans understood gravity precisely enough to use the mass of Jupiter as a slingshot.

These are not accidents. They are the fruit of reading the blueprint God left behind.

ALL THINGS HOLD TOGETHER IN HIM

"For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible... all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together."

— Colossians 1:16–17

Paul’s letter to the Colossians contains what may be the most breathtaking cosmological statement in all of Scripture. The Greek phrase translated “hold together” is sunestēken (συνέστηκεν) — a perfect tense form meaning they are presently and continuously being held in a coherent, integrated state.

This is not poetry. Or rather — it is poetry that is also physics. The strong nuclear force holds protons together in the nucleus of every atom in your body. Gravity holds planets in their orbits. Electromagnetism governs every chemical bond in every living cell. These are the mechanisms by which Christ holds all things together — the physics is the theology, expressed in the language of creation.

When a physicist studies a unified field theory — the pursuit of one equation that describes all four fundamental forces — they are, whether they know it or not, searching for the fingerprint of the One in whom all things cohere.

CREATION REVEALS THE CREATOR

"For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse."

— Romans 1:20

This is Paul’s most direct theological argument for General Revelation. Notice the exegetical weight: God’s invisible qualities are made clearly seen — through creation. The mechanism is the physical world itself. And the consequence is extraordinary: people are without excuse for failing to recognize God, because the evidence is written into the very fabric of what exists.

If that is true — and Paul says it is — then every Christian who dismisses mathematics, physics, or science as secular or irrelevant is, in a very real sense, closing their eyes to part of God’s self-disclosure. We are not doing theology less. We are doing it worse.

Johannes Kepler, who discovered the laws of planetary motion, said he was “thinking God’s thoughts after Him.” Isaac Newton, who gave us classical mechanics, saw his work as uncovering the rational design of the Creator.

GOD GAVE US THE TOOLS TO UNDERSTAND OURSELVES

"Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?"

— Job 38:4–5

When God speaks to Job from the whirlwind, He does not offer comfort in the form of platitudes. He offers cosmology. He asks about foundations, measurements, dimensions, the forces that shape weather and light. God’s challenge to Job is essentially: Do you understand how I built this?

That question has never been rescinded. We can now answer parts of it. We know how the earth’s magnetic field is generated. We know why the sky is blue and why stars burn. We can predict eclipses to the second, centuries in advance, because we understand the mathematics of orbital mechanics. Every answer we discover is, in a sense, our response to God’s question from the whirlwind.

And medicine follows the same logic. We can cure diseases because God wove the mechanisms of biology into creation in a way that yields to careful study. The DNA double helix is not a lucky accident. It is intricate design, discoverable by minds made in the image of the Designer. To understand the human body is to understand one of God’s most intimate creative acts.

SO WHY DOESN’T THE CHURCH TEACH THIS?

Here is the honest, uncomfortable question. If mathematics and physics are the language of God’s creation — if studying them is a form of worship, a kind of extended reading of God’s first book — then why have so many churches retreated entirely into the walls of the sanctuary and left the cosmos to the scientists?

Part of the answer is historical. The Enlightenment drove a wedge between faith and reason that neither side has fully healed. Religion retreated to the realm of the spiritual, and science claimed the material world as its exclusive domain. The Church, stung by controversies like the Galileo affair, became defensive rather than curious.

But part of the answer is also the same problem I had in my math class: teachers who don’t understand something deeply cannot teach it deeply. If the pastors and teachers in our churches were never themselves discipled into the wonder of creation — if they were never shown that the laws of thermodynamics and the Trinity are not competing ideas but complementary revelations — then they cannot teach what they have not received.

"My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests."

— Hosea 4:6

da’at (דַּעַת) — Deep, experiential, relational knowing — not merely informational

Hosea's words were addressed to those entrusted with the full scope of divine knowledge — and the concern was not that they lacked access to it, but that they had stopped pursuing it. The same gentle question might be extended to the Church today: if the Sabbath is the seal of God's creative authority, might it also be the doorway into a deeper, week-long wonder at what He created? The cosmos has never stopped speaking. The invitation is simply to listen.

WHAT RECOVERING THIS WOULD LOOK LIKE

This is not a call to replace theology with astrophysics. It is a call to recognize that they belong in the same conversation. Here is what recovering a theology of creation might look like in practice:

Wonder as Worship. Teaching children and adults to marvel at the Fibonacci sequence in a sunflower, the orbital resonance of Jupiter’s moons, or the folding precision of proteins — as acts of praise, not secular curiosity.
Integrated Discipleship. Forming people to see all knowledge as belonging to God. “Every good and perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17) — including the calculus Newton invented to describe the motion of the moon.
Recovering the Kepler Posture. Johannes Kepler prayed before he calculated. He approached his equations as acts of devotion. That posture — bringing both intellect and spirit to the study of creation — is profoundly biblical and profoundly lost.
The Blueprint Is Open. God did not hide the laws of the universe to frustrate us. He hid them, as Solomon said, so that the searching itself would be glorious. The Church that rediscovers this posture will produce worshippers who are more in awe of God — not less — for every equation they solve.

THE CREATOR LEFT A BLUEPRINT

"Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing."

— Isaiah 40:26

God knows the stars by name. He counts them. He holds them in orbit by the same mathematical precision that allows us to predict the trajectory of a spacecraft launched from Florida and aimed at a moon of Saturn. That precision is not mechanical indifference — it is the signature of a personal, intelligent, and meticulous Creator.

The Church was never meant to be afraid of that Creator’s creation. We were meant to be its most passionate students — the people most motivated, above all others, to understand how God built the world, because we know who built it.

Math is not secular. Physics is not atheism. They are the grammar of God’s first language, and they have been waiting — patient as the stars — for the Church to start listening again.

The blueprint is open. The heavens are still speaking. The only question is whether we will have the faith — and the curiosity — to hear them.

Reverence and Silence: Not the Same Thing

One of the most persistent confusions in contemporary church life is the assumption that reverence and silence are essentially the same thing. Walk into almost any conversation about worship style, and you will quickly discover that when people argue for "more reverence," what they often mean is "less noise." But that equation, while understandable, is not quite right theologically — and the difference matters more than we might think.

Let me explain.

What Reverence Actually Is

Theologically, reverence is a posture of the heart toward God. It is not primarily a behavior, a decibel level, or a worship style. It is an interior orientation of the whole person — soul, mind, and will — toward the living God in recognition of who He is and who we are in relation to Him.

In Scripture, reverence is deeply connected to what the Old Testament calls the "fear of the Lord." But we should be careful here, because this is not terror. It is not the cringing fear of a slave before a tyrant. It is something richer and more profound: awe, honor, humility, and a bone-deep awareness of God's holiness. It is the response of a creature who has genuinely glimpsed the Creator.

The Bible presents reverence across at least four dimensions. First, it is recognizing God's greatness — seeing Him for who He actually is, not merely for what He can do for us. Second, it is approaching Him with humility — coming not on our terms, but on His. Third, it is treating holy things as holy — not treating the sacred carelessly or casually. And fourth, it is responding in obedience, worship, and surrender — because genuine awe always produces a response.

The writer of Hebrews captures this beautifully:

"Let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear." — Hebrews 12:28

Notice that reverence is tied to how we serve God — acceptably. It is an alignment issue. It is the question of whether what we offer God actually honors Him, or whether it inadvertently honors us.

The Psalms Will Not Let Us Be Tidy About This

What is remarkable about biblical worship is how gloriously untidy it is. In the Psalms alone, God's people shout, sing, dance, weep, kneel, clap, play instruments, and fall prostrate. The full range of human expression is present — and all of it is addressed to God as legitimate worship.

King David is perhaps the most striking example. When the ark of God was brought to Jerusalem, David danced before the Lord with such abandon that his wife Michal was embarrassed watching from the window (2 Samuel 6). She saw reckless emotionalism. David saw holy abandon. The text sides with David — not because expression is always right, but because David's heart was directed entirely toward honoring God, not performing for the crowd.

At the same time, Scripture also honors the opposite. There are moments of trembling, bowing, stillness, and silence before the majesty of God — moments where words simply fail and the only appropriate response is to stop talking.

Both belong. Reverence is bigger than one emotional style.

What Silence Is — and What It Is Not

Silence is the absence of speech or noise. Spiritually, it can be a powerful gift. Silence creates space for listening. It opens room for reflection, repentance, contemplation, and attentiveness to the voice of God.

Two passages are especially foundational here:

"Be still, and know that I am God." — Psalm 46:10

"The Lord is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him." — Habakkuk 2:20

These are profound invitations. Silence can be reverent because it acknowledges that God is greater than all our words — that our noise can sometimes be a way of avoiding rather than approaching Him.

But here is the critical theological distinction: silence is not automatically holy.

A silent room can still be spiritually cold. It can harbor pride, distraction, dead formalism, or simple indifference. Silence can be a way of performing piety without actually possessing it. And by the same token, a noisy prayer meeting — voices rising, people calling out to God, tears flowing — can still be deeply, genuinely reverent if the hearts in that room are humble before Him.

This is not a minor distinction. It is a theological one that cuts to the center of how we think about worship.

The Core Difference

Here is the simplest way I know to frame it:

Reverence is a heart posture. Silence is a behavior or atmosphere.

Reverence can include joy, singing, tears, shouting, kneeling, dancing — or silence. It is rooted in awe of God, always spiritual in orientation, and internal first. Silence, by contrast, is specifically the absence of sound. It is external first. It can be spiritual, or it can simply be the absence of noise. It may serve reverence — but it does not define it.

Silence is a container. Reverence is what goes inside.

A Common Tension in Church Life

Many churches have quietly come to equate reverence with a particular aesthetic: low volume, formal atmosphere, slow pacing, emotional restraint. The assumption is that if people are quiet and still, they must be reverent. But biblically, the question is not "Are people quiet?" The question is "Is God being honored?"

Some traditions express genuine reverence through liturgy, solemnity, and silence. Others express equally genuine reverence through passionate prayer, visible emotion, and expressive praise. Both can be authentic. And both, honestly, can also become empty if the heart loses sight of God and begins performing reverence rather than practicing it.

Jesus understood this tension well. He reserved some of His sharpest words for people whose religion looked impeccably respectful externally but whose inner life had gone cold (Matthew 15:8). External form without internal reality is not reverence — it is its counterfeit.

A Healthy Theological Balance

The mature biblical picture is not a debate between silence and expression. The real question is always the same: Does this response rightly honor God?

There is a time for stillness. There is a time for joyful praise. There is a time for deep quietness and a time for loud celebration. Ecclesiastes says it plainly: there is "a time to keep silence, and a time to speak." Reverence, properly understood, knows the difference. It reads the moment and responds to God — not to cultural expectation, personal comfort, or tribal habit.

And honestly, some of the deepest moments of reverence in all of Scripture happen at the intersection of both. When Isaiah saw the Lord in the temple, he fell silent in holy dread — "Woe is me!" When the disciples witnessed the Transfiguration, they fell on their faces. Yet the Psalms regularly describe those who encounter God's glory erupting into worship so loud it could shake the rafters.

Both responses come from the same place: holy awe in the presence of the living God.

That is what reverence is. Silence may be its companion — but it is not its definition.

God With Us — In the Waiting Room

The Fever That Would Not Break

This past week, we had a scare.

Our two-year-old came down with a fever, and it was not slowing down. We did what parents do — over-the-counter medication, cool cloths, watching the thermometer like it owed us an explanation. Nothing helped. The number would not come down.

So we made the decision every parent dreads a little: we took him to urgent care.

They examined him. And then they said the words that made our hearts drop: take him to the emergency room.

If you have children, you know exactly what happened inside us in that moment. Because here is the unspoken logic of parenthood: doctors are supposed to have answers. When the doctor looks at your child and says, in effect, this is beyond what I can determine here — the mind does not go to small explanations. It goes to the big ones. It goes to the worst ones. If even the doctor doesn’t seem to know what’s going on, then this could be something really bad.

We went to the hospital carrying a fear we didn’t say out loud.

What We Carried Into That Room

At the emergency room, they ran every test they could run. And parents in hospital waiting rooms do a particular kind of praying — not eloquent, not organized, just constant. A prayer with no amen, because you never stop praying it.

Throughout the entire Bible — Old Testament and New — God repeats one promise more often than any other. It is not “I will make you prosperous.” It is not “I will make it painless.” It is this:

“I am with you.”

It is His most frequent promise in all of Scripture. In the very beginning, God was with Adam and Eve in the Garden (Genesis 2:4–3:24). He promised His presence to Noah, to Abraham and Sarah, to Isaac, to Jacob, to Joseph, to Moses, to David, to Jeremiah, to Isaiah, to Daniel, to Mary, to the disciples, to Paul — the list goes on. God has always initiated contact. He has always made Himself known and available to His people.

When God asked Moses to return to Egypt, Moses hesitated — and God’s answer was not a strategy. It was Himself: “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:12). When Joshua inherited the leadership of Israel, young and inexperienced, God said: “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Joshua 1:5). When Israel walked into the desert, God went ahead of them — a pillar of cloud by day, a pillar of fire by night — and Scripture is careful to tell us that the pillar never left its place in front of the people (Exodus 13:21–22). And when the sanctuary was built, its whole purpose was stated in one line: “Have them make me a sanctuary, so that I may dwell among them” (Exodus 25:8).

God’s presence in the camp was their protection and their hope. It still is.

Immanuel Means Exactly What It Says

This is why the name given to Jesus matters so much. Of all the names the Messiah could have carried, the prophecy said: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel — which means ‘God with us’” (Matthew 1:23; Isaiah 7:14).

That was His purpose. Not merely God for us, or God above us — God with us. When Jesus called the twelve, Mark tells us the call was first and foremost “that they might be with Him” (Mark 3:13–15). Being with Him came before doing anything for Him.

And His very last words, after giving the great commission, were not instructions. They were a promise — the old promise, the first promise, the promise that runs through the whole book:

“Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).

Then He sent the Holy Spirit, so that the presence would not be near us but in us (John 14:16).

The Answer Came — But He Was Already There

The tests came back. The conclusion, after all of that fear: an ear infection. Something small. Something treatable. Something with a name and a medicine.

We exhaled for what felt like the first time in hours.

But driving home, I realized something important. The relief came when the diagnosis came — but God’s presence did not arrive with the diagnosis. He was already in the urgent care office. He was already in the car. He was already in the waiting room, in the middle of the tests, in the fear we didn’t say out loud. The outcome revealed His mercy, but it did not summon His presence. He had been there the whole time.

That is the thing about God’s most frequent promise: it is not activated by good news. “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:8). He goes before us — He was in that emergency room before we ever pulled into the parking lot.

Wherever You Are, He Is There

Maybe you are in a waiting room of your own right now — medical or otherwise. Waiting on results. Waiting on an answer. Waiting on a fever, of whatever kind, to break.

Hear this: wherever you are, He is there. God is with you all the time. You may not feel His presence — we certainly could not feel anything in that hospital but fear — but not feeling it does not make it any less true. No one can say they are abandoned in life. God will never abandon you.

Our son is okay. We are grateful beyond words. But the deeper gift of this week was not the diagnosis — it was the reminder.

Immanuel. God with us.
